This Article first appeared in the May edition of South East Farmer Magazine.     At last now in the third week of April some warm weather appearing and we saw some grass growth and arable crops improving rapidly where established.  However it was a shock to see two inches of snow laying on the 4 April with lambs outside and no grass!   Arable crops some 3 – 4 weeks behind in Essex and surrounding counties and a real concern for harvest returns.   The cattle trade continued to strengthen throughout April with numbers still short of demand indeed numbers completely inadequate.   All cattle including the manufacturing sorts at record levels and in all honesty it is difficult to see where numbers will come…

Grahams Report – February 2013

This article first appeared in the February edition of South East Farmer   January saw a continued strong beef trade which seems to have been the highlight of the report for many months.  Indeed cattle the averages in January were higher than we had ever seen with averages seen up to over 210pkg.  It is however fair to say that cattle numbers were short and wholesalers and retail butchers are all competing strongly for the stock that was available.  230pkg is now regularly seen for cattle every week and up to the mid 240pkg for the very best butcher weight cattle.  It would be fair to say however the best trade is still seen for the commercial cattle £2.00kg now seen as a base for O+…
