Primestock Show Report 2017

Another entry of quality cattle in the Cattle Show Classes came before the Judge, Mr Colin Byford of C J Byford & Sons, Little Clacton, a long-term supporter of the livestock market at Colchester who had before him an excellent quality entry of steers and heifers in the 8 Show Classes.  After due deliberation the Judge awarded the Olivers Perpetual Challenge Trophy for the Best Beast in the Show to W A Ketley & Sons, Fingringhoe, Colchester for a Limousin heifer which also was awarded the Broad Oak Farm Perpetual Cup for Best Butchers Beast under 550kg and the Derek Abra Trophy for Best Butchers Steer under 550kg and Best Limousin Sired Heifer in Show.  After strong bidding this was sold to John Coleman for his shop in Boxted, a very regular supporter of the sale and weekly auction.  The beast made 400pkg for £2,072.00.

The Judge gave the Overall Reserve Championship to Rita Parker of North Burlingham, Norfolk for a home bred steer weighing 551kg and also awarded the Roy Brazier Memorial Trophy for Best Steer 551kg or over and the Best Limousin Sired Steer in Show.  Again, after strong bidding the beast sold to Swanton Morley Butchers, Swanton Morley, Norfolk at 345pkg (£1,900.13).

The Arthur Chalke Perpetual Trophy for Best Heifer over 551kg awarded to David & Charlie Coe trading as C A Coe & Son, Gt Wenham, and purchased by Allman Fowler of Fowler Bros, Burnham on Crouch at 280pkg (£1,671.60).

The Derek Abra Perpetual Trophy for Best Steer under 550kg awarded again to Rita Parker and purchased on behalf of Bramfield Meats, Bramfield at 305pkg (£1,464.00).

The Eric Stanion Memorial Trophy for Best Home Bred Steer or Heifer under 550kg awarded to Geoff Freeman, another tremendous supporter of the market and purchased by Chas Bowers Butchers of Gt Holland at 285pkg (£1,299.60).

The Perpetual Cup for the Best Pair of Butchers Beasts awarded to W A Ketley & Sons for a pair of pure bred Limousin heifers, both selling at 285pkg, one to Bramfield Meats and one to John Coleman and realising £1,510.50 and £1,516.20 a head.

The Joe Papworth Memorial Trophy for the Best Unhaltered Steer in the Show awarded to Bob Manning, Cornard Tye, and also awarded the Best Unhaltered Steer in Show and purchased by Fowler Bros at 260pkg (£1,502.80).  The Best Unhaltered Heifer in Show presented to a home bred Limousin heifer consigned by Danny Raven of Raven Bros, Mettingham, and again purchased by Fowler Bros at 240pkg (£1,444.80).

A full result sheet is attached to this report.  Other notable prices per kg for other prize winners included 350pkg for a lightweight butchers steer consigned by Miss Amy Kinge and purchased by George Debman, Ipswich, and grossing £1,764.00, 290pkg for a handyweight butchers home bred steer consigned by Geoff Freeman at 290pkg.

All Show Cattle av 255.70pkg with steers av 251.31 and heifers 262.06pkg.

All cattle a tremendous credit to the vendors who support this centre and grateful thanks to the purchasers who support us and the vendors.  It was good to see an increase in the entry up 20% on the year.  Thank you all.

Non-Show cattle a real mixture and from 99.5pkg to 235.5pkg, generally meat wanted but several leaner sorts for which less demand would be expected, however, still a good result for these forward, and more wanted.  235.5pkg for a quality heifer from Brian Lumber (£1,276.41) and Rip Harvey for steers (£1,344.71) and 234.5pkg from the same vendor.  Black & Whites to 177.5pkg for best meated sorts from 99.5pkg for extreme sorts.

O- Shorthorn steers 150.5 to 162.5pkg.  All included in the overall averages of steers 212.95pkg and heifers 224.51pkg.  OTMS a firm trade for a short entry.

741 SHEEP more than double last year’s entry and a welcome increase in demand.

74 sheep in the Show Classes and the Judge, Mr John Coleman of Boxted, commented on the quality of the heavy lambs forward and gave him a difficult decision to make but, after lengthy deliberation, the Judge awarded the Overall Show Champion The William Gray Challenge Cup for Best Pair of Lambs in the Show to a regular supporter of this centre, G J Goff Ltd of North Earlham, Norfolk.  The pair of Texel X lambs also winning the George Debman Perpetual Trophy for Lambs over 40kg and the Wiston Trophy for Best Lambs Sired by a Texel Ram.

The lambs weighing 50kg were purchased by George Debman of Ipswich for his shop in Cliff Lane, Ipswich at £260 a head or 520pkg, a record price for lambs at this centre.  The Goffs also taking 2nd and 3rd in the Class.

The Best Pen of Lambs under 40kg being awarded the Colchester District Meat Traders Perpetual Trophy were consigned by W A Ketley & Sons, Fingringhoe and purchased by Messrs Evans Butchers, Dedham at £89 a head (228pkg).

Several pens of non-prize winners £100 and above and many pens at £85 and above with 200pkg regularly seen.  As always, meat and finish pays.
